He was born on 11 July 1923 in a remote village in Uttar Pradesh. She was named Uma Devi, but after losing her parents at a young age, she was raised by her other relatives, but what always kept her busy was her passion for singing. Although due to weak family status, he did not get any formal education in music, yet he never allowed the vocals to weaken. Meanwhile, he met Inspector Akhtar Abbaaz Qazi in the Excise Department of Delhi. He supported them and boosted their confidence, but after the partition of the country, Qazi Saheb went to Lahore.

Here, fed up with the situation, Uma Devi quietly fled to Bombay, dreaming of singing in films. On the other hand, Qazi Sahib did not feel like Lahore, so as soon as he got a chance, he also went to Bombay, then both of them got married. She started her career in the film industry as a singer under the leadership of musician Naushad. Soon after touching the boom in singing, he had to leave the film industry due to domestic reasons. During this, he gave his melodious voice to about 40 to 45 songs.

This was the period when singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Noor Jahan and Shamshad Begum were there. She was forced to switch from singer Uma Khatri to actress Tuntun to bring up the family. In fact, in the second innings, Uma’s weight had increased, which also affected her singing. At the behest of musician Naushad, she accepted to become an actress and gave her a new name “Tuntun”.

Naushad gave her the opportunity as an actress in her first home production film “Babul”. Her popularity was such that during that period she used to be in every second-third film, even if her role was small. She was as cool in real life as she was seen on the film screen.
