Smita Patil, who started her film career with Shyam Benegal’s “Nishant” in 1975, emerged as a strong actress with Manthan in 1976 and role in 1977. He also got the first National Award for the role of “Bhumika“. Smita Patil Biography
Smita Patil, daughter of former Maharashtra minister Shivajirao Patil, had a deep love for theater since her student days. She considered it necessary to participate in every program of the school. She considered it her utmost duty to raise voice against injustice. This was the reason that along with acting, she also took part in the movements in the metropolis. She loved to work in female-oriented films.
She used to say that dancing, singing, loving and crying are not in the destiny of a woman. Due to his views, he considered marriage and love to be different. In his view, marriage was necessary only to fulfill social obligations and to have children. This was the reason that she was ready to support Raj Babbar without even getting married.
Her first film with Raj Babbar was “Bheegi Palke”. During the shooting of this film, Smita was impressed by Raj’s calm nature and acting talent and both of them went on to bond with each other. Knowing that Raj Babbar was married, Smita Patil tied the knot with Raj in a temple in Madras on 17 May 1982 against the wishes of her family. She needed love and social security which she had got but she could not keep Raj’s side for long. She passed away on 13th December, 15 days after giving birth to a son on 28th November.
Before coming to films, Smita Patil was a Marathi news reader at Mumbai Doordarshan Kendra. Shyam Benegal saw Smita on TV for the first time, since then he saw the qualities of a successful heroine in her. Benegal used to say that his style of speaking, expression of eyes and voice was such that it attracted everyone.
