Shammi Kapoor Biography
Shammi Kapoor, the first singing-dancing star of Hindi films, was the second son of well-known theater actor and film actor Prithviraj Kapoor. Shammi Kapoor was born on 21 October 1931 in Mumbai. He made his acting debut in the year 1953 with the film “Jeevan Jyoti”. In the year 1957, where he worked with actress Amita in Nasir Hussain’s film “Tumsa Nahi Dekha”, he appeared in the 1959 film “Dil De Ke Dekho” opposite Asha Parekh.
In the year 1961, the film “Junglee” brought him to the heights of fame. After this he managed to make his image as a dance artist in all kinds of films. The song “Yahoo” from the film was liked by the audience. He worked with Asha Parekh in four films, in which the most successful film was “Teesri Aankh” made in the year 1966. Shammi Kapoor, who is known as the “Elvis Presley of India”, made his acting debut till the silver screen, when Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar dominated along with his elder brother Raj Kapoor. Despite having a family background, his early films flopped at the box office. He introduced himself in a new look in the fifties with “Tumsa Nahi Dekha” by getting a “duck-tail” style haircut. He had freed the heroes of that era from many bonds with the rebellious attitude and rockstar image in his films. This was his big give to Hindi cinema. He was of a very fond mood. He was fond of driving different types of vehicles, playing golf in the evening, knew well to move with the times. There were many difficult times in his life, especially when his wife Geeta Bali passed away in the 60s. He directed two films namely Manoranjan and Bandalbaaz but these films did not work. As a character actor, he received the Best Supporting Actor Award in 1982 for the film Vidhata. He was not only a popular actor but also a wonderful human being. He breathed his last on 14 August 2011 at the Breeze Candy Hospital in Mumbai.
